TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER 1200X: THE EVOLUTION OF A MODERN CLASSIC
Triumph's road-focused update to the Scrambler 1200X caught our attention. We never considered the previous Scrambler as a custom platform—until we got our hands on this one. The 2024 model replaces the previous 1200XC, bringing significant changes that position it as a more accessible, road-focused alternative to its adventure-ready XE sibling.
At 32.3 inches, the seat height sits two inches lower than the XE and an inch lower than the previous XC. The Marzocchi suspension offers 170mm of travel versus the XE's off-road focused 250mm. It's this balanced approach—blending classic Scrambler aesthetics with practical street performance—that makes the 1200X such an appealing platform for modification.
A SUPERIOR PLATFORM
Previously, we used the Triumph Bonneville T120 as our tracker-build foundation. The 1200X, however, brings several key advantages: it's approximately 8kg lighter (228kg vs 236kg) and delivers more power (90PS vs 79PS), resulting in a superior power-to-weight ratio despite both bikes sharing the same engine architecture.
The 1200X's frame geometry creates more nimble handling with a stance that naturally suits the tracker aesthetic. Its longer-travel suspension provides greater flexibility for ride height adjustments while maintaining proper suspension performance. The higher ground clearance allows for more aggressive cornering—essential for a bike that should feel equally at home on dirt ovals and twisty back roads.
This build represents our initial testing phase with the 1200X platform. The most important technical distinction: the 1200X features completely redesigned headers compared to previous models, requiring us to develop a new iteration of our renowned Shotgun Exhaust system.
CLEANED-UP TAIL SECTION
The stock license plate on the Scrambler 1200X extends awkwardly beyond the tire, disrupting the bike's otherwise clean lines. Our Tail Tidy relocates the plate underneath the fender, creating a more streamlined profile that enhances the Scrambler's aggressive stance. Constructed from 304 stainless steel with powder-coated black mounting points, it's engineered to withstand the elements while reducing unnecessary weight.
The Tail Tidy pairs perfectly with our Plug & Play Pan Tail Light. The stock plastic light simply doesn't do justice to the classic lines of the Scrambler 1200x. Our Aluminum Pan Tail Light housing attaches to the factory mounting points, using our Pan Tail Light Adapter that mounts to the rear fender using the stock taillight mounting points, requiring zero modifications to your bike. The intuitive plug-and-play harness eliminates wiring complications, resulting in a clean installation that preserves the Scrambler's vintage-inspired character.
REFINED ILLUMINATION
The factory front turn signals on the Scrambler 1200X protrude, resembling Mickey Mouse ears that detract from the bike's sleek silhouette. Our Plug & Play Retro LED Turn Signals integrate seamlessly into the factory position and connect directly to the original harness. These aluminum-bodied indicators deliver a sophisticated appearance while ensuring visibility.
Installing the Tail Tidy required relocating the rear turn signals. Our Rear Frame Mount Retro LED Turn Signals tuck neatly against the frame, keeping them protected in case of a drop while maintaining the clean aesthetic we were after. The LED technology ensures bright, consistent illumination without taxing the electrical system.
ENHANCED CONTROL POINTS
While the Scrambler 1200X offers excellent ergonomics from the factory, we identified two key areas for improvement at the control points. Our Low Profile Bar End Finishers provide an offset that allows bar end mirrors to be mounted without exposing excess portions of the handlebar. This creates a cleaner, more integrated appearance at the control points—a small detail that makes a significant visual impact.
After extensive testing of various options, we selected the CRG Hindsight LS Mirrors for their superior construction and functionality. The folding mechanism provides extra clearance in tight spaces, while the vibration-resistant design ensures clear visibility regardless of terrain. The convex glass delivers an expanded field of view—critical for both urban commuting and off-road adventures—without the distortion found in lower-quality alternatives.
PROTECTION FOR ADVENTURE
Though the Scrambler 1200X has a lower stance than its XE and XC counterparts, it's still built for adventure. Our Engine Guards provide essential protection for off-road exploration. Fabricated from 1.25" steel tubing with 0.09" walls and reinforced with 1/4" laser-cut gussets, these guards defend the engine and critical components during low-speed drops or off-road mishaps. The durable semi-gloss black powder coat finish resists chips and corrosion while complementing the Scrambler's rugged aesthetic.
Additionally, these Engine Guards serve as an excellent platform for mounting auxiliary lights. The sturdy steel construction provides a solid foundation for securing aftermarket lighting options, enhancing visibility during night rides or adverse weather conditions without requiring additional drilling or modifications to the bike's frame.
CUSTOM FABRICATION
The most significant challenge came with the exhaust system. We discovered the headers and exhaust on the 1200X are completely different from other models, necessitating a full system development. For the 2024 model year, Triumph completely redesigned the exhaust headers with two key goals: reducing heat transfer to the rider and enhancing low-end torque.
The factory redesign included revised headers with modified routing and improved heat shields specifically engineered to keep excessive heat away from the rider's leg—a common complaint with previous Scrambler models, especially in slow-moving traffic or when stopped. This improvement is particularly noticeable for riders with shorter inseams who found their legs closer to the heat-radiating pipes.
Our prototype Shotgun Exhaust builds upon these improvements, featuring larger diameter pipes and innovative two-stage baffles to manage sound levels while maximizing performance. We've maintained the heat-reduction benefits of the factory redesign while enhancing the exhaust note to deliver a throaty rumble that enhances the riding experience without becoming obnoxious on longer journeys.
