How to Install the Shock Hardware Dress-Up Kit on Your Triumph Street Twin

Tools You'll Need

• 10mm socket
• 12mm socket
• 12mm wrench
• 6mm hex bit
• 8mm hex bit
• 5mm hex bit
• Small flathead screwdriver
• Torque wrench
• Blue Loctite
• Grease (small amount, for the foot peg ball bearing)
• Isopropyl alcohol and a rag

Step 1: Loosen the Muffler Clamp (0:41)

Using a 10mm socket, loosen the muffler clamp. You don't need to remove it completely — just enough that the stock muffler will slide off.

Step 2: Remove the Muffler Mounting Bolt (0:53)

Using a 12mm socket and a 12mm wrench, hold the nut on the back side while you back the bolt all the way out.

Step 3: Remove the Foot Peg (1:29)

There's a small ball bearing and spring clip inside the foot peg that keep it locked in place — don't lose these.

1. Use a small screwdriver to reach into the small hole and pluck out the spring clip.
2. Push the pin up and out. Keep a hand underneath in case the ball bearing falls out as you pull it free.
3. Set the pin, ball bearing, and spring aside together so you don't lose track of them.

Step 4: Remove the Foot Peg Mount and Bushing (2:17)

Using a 12mm wrench and a 6mm hex, remove the foot peg mount and bushing, then pull the stock muffler free.

Step 5: Repeat on the Right Side (3:06)

The right side follows the same steps as the left, with one less mounting point to deal with. Loosen the clamp with the 10mm socket, then remove the foot peg (don't lose the clip or ball bearing) and the mount/bushing with the 6mm hex and 12mm wrench.

Step 6: Remove the Shock Bolts — One Shock at a Time (4:19)

Using an 8mm hex bit, remove both bolts on one shock.

⚠️ Only work on one shock at a time. If you remove both shocks' mounting bolts at once, the whole bike will come down. Finish one side completely before starting the other.

Step 7: Install the New Bolts (4:53)

1. Take the washer that came off with the stock bolt and slip it onto the new bolt.
2. Apply a small amount of blue Loctite to the threads.
3. Thread it in with a 5mm hex bit and torque to 28 Nm.
4. Repeat for the bottom bolt on the same shock, also torqued to 28 Nm.

Tip from James: The Loctite isn't just there to keep the bolt from backing out — once it's torqued down, it works like an adhesive that holds the bolt in place under load.

Step 8: Repeat on the Other Shock (6:15)

Same process: remove both bolts with the 8mm hex, install the new bolts with the stock washer and a dot of blue Loctite, and torque both to 28 Nm. Remember — only remove this shock's bolts once the first shock is fully reinstalled.

Step 9: Reinstall the Stock Muffler (8:20)

Check the gasket inside the muffler before putting it back on.

Tip from James: If you're reinstalling the stock muffler, inspect the gasket and replace it if it's not in good shape. If you're installing a British Customs slip-on instead, you don't need that gasket at all.

Step 10: Reinstall the Foot Peg Mount and Bracket (8:49)

Line the bolt through the hole, making sure the alignment dowel lines up with the hole on the frame so the bracket sits flush. Secure the nut with a 6mm hex and 12mm wrench, then torque to 24 Nm.

Step 11: Tighten the Muffler Clamp (9:55)

Using the 10mm socket, tighten the clamp and torque to 20 Nm.

Step 12: Reinstall the Passenger Foot Peg (10:29)

Make sure the ball bearing and spring are back in place — a little grease helps keep the ball from falling out. Orient the spring clip so the tabs face outward and will lock onto the bracket, then reinsert the original pin and pop the clip into the groove.

Step 13: Repeat Steps 9-12 on the Left Side (11:21)

Same process on the left: check the gasket, and if the top hat washer came loose, it installs facing towards the motorcycle. Line up the dowel pin with the frame, torque the bracket bolt to 24 Nm, the mounting bolt to 19 Nm, and the clamp to 20 Nm, then reinstall the foot peg the same way as the right side.

Step 14: Final Wipe-Down (14:44)

Wipe the exhaust down with isopropyl alcohol to remove any fingerprints or grease. This step matters — any oils left on the pipe will burn in once you run the bike, leaving permanent marks.
